Elephants are distinguished by their very high degree of socialization and amazing mutual assistance. That’s why this situation was exceptional when the herd abandoned the baby. Ellie was only two weeks old when she was found in one of the reserves in Southern Africa. The baby was very sick and apparently the herd could no longer “pull” her.
Ellie was quickly taken to the vet who found out that she had a neglected hernia. She would have no chance to survive in the wild, because there was a wound around her navel where an infection had occurred . But the experts decided not to give up and began to treat the baby.
The animal refused to drink milk and the staff had to prepare a special dish of rice and coconut oil for her. After a while the baby elephant got stronger and had a very good appetite.
But except from physical recovery she also needed emotional recovery. Ellie was very sad and detached and it was very difficult for her to survive without any support. She refused to be friends with people.
One of the employees offered Duma as both a companion and a nanny. It was an old shepherd dog who had been serving as a border guard, but was already retired. Duma was very friendly to the all kinds of animals.
And this was the best solution! Ellie began to communicate with Duma at first with shyness but then she communicated more and more daringly, . The dog was also delighted with his role. But then another problem appeared. The baby elephant developed extensive sepsis which was incompatible with life. He passed away very soon, but before leaving he had at least felt love and friendship.
