This unique story, however, began with an unexpected initiative by the owner of a small café in Toronto named Grinder Coffee Gerrard.
Joel Murray, the café’s owner, is a huge fan of the world-famous Canadian actor Ryan Gosling.
In early September, the Toronto International Film Festival was underway, and Ryan was in town to promote his latest film. Seizing the opportunity, Joel launched a creative campaign on Twitter, inviting her favorite actor to visit the café daily using the hashtag #ryanneedsgrinder.
To make the invitation even more intriguing, Joel printed a life-sized cardboard cutout of Ryan Gosling and placed it in the café, encouraging staff and customers to take photos with it.
The café came up with countless reasons for Ryan to stop by—they promised him a cup of delicious coffee, highlighted the convenience of their location, and even joked that he could pose for pictures with his cardboard doppelgänger.
The playful campaign quickly gained traction in the local media, and even the city’s mayor, John Tory, showed his support for the initiative.
As the days passed, there was no word from the real Ryan. The café staff kept things lighthearted by treating the cardboard cutout to a “relaxation day” complete with a massage and a fresh haircut. They even created a special map to guide the actor to their café, yet Ryan still hadn’t shown up.
Finally, on the 10th day of the campaign, persistence paid off—the real Ryan Gosling walked into the café!
He greeted Joel, posed for photos, enjoyed a cup of coffee, and chatted with the staff and visitors.
“And it happened… #ryanneedsgrinder worked. Here he is, in person. What a kind, respectful Canadian guy. We’re incredibly grateful that Ryan took the time to visit us during the Toronto International Film Festival,” Joel shared excitedly.
It turns out that Ryan’s mother, Donna Gosling, played a role in encouraging the actor to visit. She found the campaign delightful and suggested that Ryan should stop by the café.
