In the 1960s, these suitcases were considered very fashionable. They were highly sought after and something to be proud of. The cheap technology used to make lightweight suitcases took over the world, and it was no longer necessary to create large, bulky suitcases made of leather or wood. Nowadays, it’s not easy to find one of these suitcases, especially in good condition.
You might find one on websites or at a flea market. Some people sell them as vintage props, and sometimes, you’ll see them near trash bins, waiting to be picked up by someone who needs them.
I have the fondest memories of one such suitcase. My dad used to bring mandarins in it when he came home from a business trip. I remember the sweet smell of mandarins filling the house. In those days, when things were scarce, it felt like a small miracle.
I often tell my friends about it, and now almost every one of them has given me a similar suitcase with mandarins in it. When I see one, it takes me back to my childhood, back to the time of black-and-white movies. I remember those perfect suitcases of the elegant teachers and hard-working people. Frosya arrived in the capital with one, and teacher Levchenko left for the countryside with the same. How could anyone throw away such family history?
So today, I brought home an old suitcase. It must have been cared for and had something important stored in it. It’s still in great shape—no wrinkles, and the locks are intact with no rust. I’ve decided to turn this suitcase into a vintage side table. But first, I had to clean and wash it.
It took me three days to paint it. You can’t just paint it all at once. First, I painted the top and then the bottom after drying the first layer.
In the end, using a roller, I turned the suitcase into a perfectly white piece. I also found an old stool in the countryside junk pile, so I used its legs.
I decided to add a touch of gold to the metal parts. A spray can worked well for this. I covered the suitcase with paper stencils and sprayed the metal parts gold.
I did the same for the legs, giving the bottom of them a gold finish.
I added a piece of furniture board to make a stand, and the legs were screwed in a bit askew to give it a unique look. Then, I attached the suitcase to the stand, filling it with photo albums and other things I don’t need every day. There was enough space on top for a lovely vase, turning the suitcase into a stylish and eye-catching addition to the room.
