Gwilym Pugh was 22 years old and working as an insurance agent from home. It seemed like the perfect setup — all he needed was a computer and the Internet, and he was earning good money without leaving the house.
But there was a downside. Not only was the computer close by — so was the fridge. Without noticing, Gwilym got into a habit of sitting all day, working 12 hours or more, and constantly snacking. Over time, he went from being a fit young man to weighing 127 kilograms. He began to feel short of breath and had constant aches all over his body.
Something had to change. Gwilym already had a reason to improve — he dreamed of performing on stage with his friends in their folk band. But he needed a push to get started.
That push came from an unexpected place — the barber’s chair. During a visit for a haircut, the barber suggested he grow a beard, saying it would give him a stronger, more masculine look. Gwilym took the advice. He started growing a thick red beard, and that small change made him look and feel more confident.
Once the beard was growing in, he took the next step: changing his eating habits. He started choosing healthier, balanced meals and cut back on time spent sitting at the computer. “You can’t make all the money in the world,” Gwilym thought, “and you can’t buy your health back.” As he began to lose weight, he joined a gym and added regular workouts to his routine.
