Most People Just Cook With It, But I Planted My Ginger Root — And What Happened Next Was Truly Unexpected

“I bought it at the store—now it’s nearly 70 cm tall.” One sprouting ginger root turned into a fast-growing, beautiful plant 🌱🪴 See how it all started (and what it looks like now) in the article 👇📸

Most people know that ginger root is great for boosting the immune system. That’s why I try to buy it from time to time — and luckily, our local store almost always has it in stock.

About a month and a half ago, while picking out some ginger, I noticed a root with small, swollen buds. I suddenly thought: Could this actually sprout? The idea excited me, so I added it to my basket.

This time, there was no need to grow anything from seed — I already had the root, and it looked like it just needed a little encouragement.

I planted it in a roomy pot, leaving the top of the root exposed above the soil. I thought that would make it easier for the buds to start growing.

But after a week — nothing. No new shoots, no signs of growth. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Everything seemed perfect for sprouting.

So I changed my approach. I covered the whole root with soil and kept watering it regularly, hoping it would finally wake up.

And it worked! A week later, the first green shoot appeared — it had come to life! Not long after, a second one sprouted, and the first had already grown to 10 cm tall. Day by day, the shoots grew stronger and taller. Within 12 days, the first sprout reached 65 cm, with leaves about 3 cm wide.

At this rate, I’ll need to move it to the garden soon!

The next morning, a third sprout emerged. It seems the plant is loving its new home now.

Besides being useful and healthy, ginger is also quite beautiful. In the fall, mature ginger plants produce large red buds filled with aromatic juice that has natural antiseptic properties.

Ginger flowers are incredibly long-lasting — they can stay fresh in a vase for weeks.

And to think… this amazing plant came from an ordinary grocery store.
