A Canadian family was stunned when their bulldog, Freya, gave birth to eight puppies — and one of them came out with a rare green coat.

Trevor and Audra Mosher, the owners, said they were shocked to see the unusual coloring on one of the newborns. While the other puppies were born in translucent sacs, the green pup arrived in a darker, black one. After some quick research, the couple learned this rare phenomenon is linked to a pigment called biliverdin, a green bile found in the mother’s womb.

The puppy’s unusual appearance sparked excitement in the family. They brainstormed names, considering “Hulkette” and “Pistachio,” before settling on Fiona — a nod to the green princess from Shrek. Audra later wrote on Facebook, “A green puppy is so rare. I kind of wish the color would stay forever, it would be really cool!”
Veterinarian Dr. Bronwyn Crane explained that the odds of a green puppy being born are about one in 10,000. She admitted she had never seen one herself. While the green shade will fade with time, eventually disappearing completely, the puppy’s unique entrance into the world has already left a big impression.

The rare sight has not only surprised the family but also caught the attention of dog lovers online, who can’t get enough of the puppy’s vibrant beginning.
