There is a rural legend in Sri Lanka that one woman always piled straw and other leftovers from the harvest at the edge of the forest to feed the beast. Some years later, when she grew old, became deaf and could barely see, she went for brushwood and got lost. The villagers had been looking for her for three days, and when they found the woman, they were very surprised. She was covered with wide palm leaves, and there were many elephant traces around her, which showed that the huge creatures protected her from predators. This proves once again that animals are really capable of compassion, and even love and gratitude!
