This story is about the reddish-brown Malabar squirrel who is also known as Shekru.
His length can reach up to a meter and he also has a shiny blue fluffy tail. This stylish cute squirrel also has a gorgeous bright color.
Malabar is not too picky in his diet and he can freely eat anything he wants. Using their huge fluffy tails they search for flowers, seeds, insects and even bird eggs.
Although little is known about the Malabar giant squirrel population it is believed to be declining.
They aren’t currently listed as endangered species but unfortunately the cute squirrels face some real threats; they are hunted in parts of India for their beautiful coats and their habitat is gradually diminishing because of the human activities. Unfortunately, they have already completely disappeared in some areas.
The amateur photographer Mohammed Farouk from the beautiful forest town of Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu state, South India, stumbled upon the giant Malabar squirrel during his daily walk.
“I used to see these squirrels all over the city who were flying from tree to tree but their numbers gradually diminished.”
“During these years many people in this area have learned to respect nature. I think there is a resurgence in the squirrel population right now. They are coming back. “- the woman tells.
Now in the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary which is an area that is specifically designated to protect the Malabar giant squirrel the giant squirrel population is growing steadily.
The census showed that between 2015 and 2016 their number has been increasing by 8%.
It seems that this beautiful and beloved animal is now receiving the respect and protection he really deserves.
