For nearly fifty years, Benito Hernandez, from Mexico, held onto the dream of building a cabin beneath a large rock in the Coahuila desert. As a child, he had seen the spot and felt a deep desire to live there forever.
As life moved forward, school came first, then love found in Santa Marta, with whom he had seven children. He shared his dream with her, and instead of laughing at his idea, she became excited about the possibility of living in the desert. That was the first step in making it all come true.
The construction began. The location of the cabin meant they didn’t need air conditioning because the temperature was always just right, no matter the time of day or season. There was no electricity, but they were able to set up a sewage system quickly enough.
The house beneath the boulder became a well-known place in the area. They started attracting tourists who were curious about the unique home, and over time, the family made money by showing visitors the place. To add extra income, Benito also displayed rock art.
The tourists loved what Benito had created. He was even offered $100,000 (around two million pesos) to sell the place, but he turned it down.
Even with modest earnings, Benito holds onto the hope that someday he’ll be able to build sleeping quarters for tourists in a nearby boulder just across from his home.
He dreams that this will help improve his business even more.
