Jennifer Lopez wowed onlookers at the screening of the movie-musical Kiss of the Spider Woman. Speaking later at the press conference, she recalled her audition for the 1996 film Evita, a memory from years past.

“I went in to audition for the role of Evita. I rehearsed for weeks, poured my heart into the performance, and then director Alan Parker said to me, ‘You’re amazing! But you know the role went to Madonna, right?’ I just smiled and said, ‘Alright, goodbye — it was a pleasure meeting you,’ Lopez recalled with a laugh.

Madonna’s role as Eva Perón in the 1996 musical Evita earned the film five Oscar nominations in 1997 and a win for Best Original Song. Lopez has reflected on her own experiences auditioning for musicals, saying at the January Kiss of the Spider Woman premiere that she also tried out for Chicago and Nine. “There were countless projects I wanted to join, but the timing wasn’t right. In the end, things unfolded exactly as they were meant to,” she said.

Almost 30 years after her missed chance with Evita, Lopez is making her movie-musical debut. Kiss of the Spider Woman, inspired by the 1993 Broadway production, is slated for release on October 10.
